The sound knowledge of viniculture, brought to the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley by French Huguenots since the 1600’s, has contributed significantly towards this picturesque corner of the Cape Winelands. Abraham Andries le Roux, of French descent, nurtured and developed the farm Kliprug – known today as Val de Vie – translated from French it means ‘Valley of Life.’

Val de Vie’s signature red blend, launched during the 2018 Harvest Season, has been named after the estate’s rich history and entrenchment in the Valley’s culture of fine food and wine.

The area’s fertile soil and Mediterranean-like climate produce ‘farm to table’ dining – a gastronomic concept that has been prevalent in the area for centuries. Orchards, vegetable gardens and livestock thrive in the near perfect farming conditions of the Valley and these fresh, locally sourced ingredients are highly sought after.

The ideal climate and blend of cool and warm winds have always played a prominent role in the production of Val de Vie’s award winning wines, resulting in high quality yields of sophisticated wines, such as the Val de Vie 1783 blend and Val de Vie Shiraz. Valley of Life is a re-embodiment of these fine wines and is known as Val de Vie’s Signature red blend.

The wine is medium to full bodied with notes of blackcurrant, cassis and red fruits, interlaced with nutmeg and cinnamon spice. A traditional Sunday lunch of roast chicken, pork crackling, oven baked potatoes and vegetables will be perfectly accompanied by this 2014 blend.

Valley of Life is sold exclusively on Val de Vie Estate at the L’Huguenot Venue & Vinoteque at R180 per bottle. To place your order contact Barbara Hugo on

A rich coloured Bordeaux blend with bright purple hues

Majority of the grapes are sourced from the Stellenbosch area. Grapes were hand-picked and sorted, harvested at optimal ripeness of 25 degrees balling. Fermentation took place at between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius. During wine-making there was minimal intervention, with regular punch-downs and pump-overs for extraction of colour and flavor. Extended skin contact was allowed for seven days after fermentation. Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks. The varieties were matured separately in a combination of first, second and third fill French Oak barrels for 12 months. Thereafter, blending took place and the wine was returned to the barrels for a further 6 to 8 months to ensure optimal integration of the blend.
